Agathonos Anna

Mezzo Soprano

After having completed her vocal studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, the greek mezzo joined the Opera Studio of Marseilles (CNIPAL) for two years before becoming a member of the Musiktheater im Revier Gelsenkirchen in the 2001/2002 season. She first appeared in lyric mezzo-soprano parts, such as Mozart's Cherubino („Le Nozze di Figaro“), Dorabella („Così fan tutte“) and Ramiro („Die Gärtnerin aus Liebe“), Rossini's Angelina („La Cenerentola“), Rosina („Il Barbiere di Siviglia“) and Melibea („Il Viaggio a Reims“), specializing in the belcanto repertoire (Nerestano in Bellini's „Zaira“, Arturo in Donizetti's „Rosmonda d´Inghilterra“, Armando d´Orville and Felicia in Meyerbeer's „Il Crociato in Egitto“ and Aurelio in Donizetti's „L´Assedio di Calais“). Later on she added several dramatic mezzo-soprano parts to her repertoire such as Verdi's Azucena in „Il Trovatore“ and Amneris in „Aida“, the title role in Bizet's „Carmen“, Berlioz' Cassandre in „Les Troyens“ and Marguerite in „La Damnation de Faust“, Saint-Saëns' Dalila in „Samson et Dalila“ and R. Strauss' Composer in „Ariadne auf Naxos“.

Nevertheless her voice didn´t loose it´s lyrical characteristics and allowed her to continue performing also lyrical parts such as Mozart's Cherubino in „Le Nozze di Figaro“ (Opera Ireland), J. Strauß' Orlofsky in „Die Fledermaus“ and Rossini's Rosina in „Il Barbiere di Siviglia“. Anna Agathonos has also participated in several productions of contemporary music and has created the female leading roles in the world premieres of Alexander Müllenbach's opera „Die Todesbrücke“ for the RuhrTriennale festival and Isidora Zebeljan's opera „Simon, der Erwählte“.

Guest performances have led Anna Agathonos to important German Opera houses (Staatsoper Hannover, Staatstheater Nürnberg, Oldenburgisches Staatstheater, Oper Bonn, Oper Krefeld/Mönchengladbach, Stadttheater Bremerhaven, Theater Pforzheim, Oper Erfurt), as well as to France, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Ireland and Greece. She is also an accomplished song recital and oratorio singer.

Anna Agathonos left the Musiktheater im Revier Gelsenkirchen in July 2010 to establish a career as a freelance singer. Ever since she has given her highly appraised debut at the Greek National Opera in her home town Athens as Rosina and performed in Erfurt in the Bach Pasticcio „Triumph der Liebe“, in Oldenburg (Amneris) and in Pforzheim (Carmen, Amneris). In 2012 she also gave her debut in the contralto part of Magdalena in Kienzl's „Der Evangelimann“ in Klagenfurt.
